Problems With Power? Signs You Need A New Transformer

If you depend on your dry type transformer, you need to focus on performance. You might not realise this, but minor changes in performance can indicate the need for repair or replacement. That's why it's important for you to conduct monthly inspections of your power transformers. If you're not sure what to look for, read the list provided below. This information will help you identify serious problems with your transformer. If you notice any of the following issues, it's time to replace your transformer.

Insulation

If you're concerned about the condition of your transformer, now's the time to familiarise yourself with the insulation. Transformers are protected by an inside layer of insulation. A well-running transformer will have light-coloured insulation. If the insulation inside your transformer has changed, take a closer look at the distribution. Colour change could be a sign that your transformer is overheating. This is especially true if the colour change is more pronounced towards the top of the transformer. If you notice a significant colour change in the insulation, it's time to invest in a new transformer.

Vibration

If you have a transformer on site, you might have noticed a slight vibration coming from the unit. If that's the case, your transformer is functioning properly. It's normal for transformers to experience some vibration. Transformers are equipped with anti-vibration pads that help to prevent damage. However, the anti-vibration pads can wear out over time. When that happens, the vibration can damage your transformer. If you've noticed a significant increase in the severity or frequency of the vibration, the anti-vibration pads may have worn out, which means it might be time for a new transformer.

Noises

If you're worried about your transformer, it's time to pay attention to the sounds. You might not realise this, but changes in sounds can be a sign of trouble for your transformer. This is especially true if your transformer is making loud noises, or the ordinary noises have increased in severity. As soon as you notice changes in transformer sounds, schedule an inspection. It might be time for a replacement.

Coils

Finally, if you're concerned about your industrial transformer, be sure to inspect the coils. When your transformer is operating at maximum efficiency, you shouldn't notice any changes in the positioning of your coils. However, if your transformer is experiencing power surges, you may notice that the coils shift within the unit. If the coils have shifted, there's a good chance that your transformer needs to be replaced.
